Sash Window Maintenance and Repair

This one-day course will teach participants the history and basic structure/function of traditional sash windows and how to undertake maintenance and basic repairs to keep windows operating. Participants will assess windows for condition and learn how to disassemble and undertake repairs to sashes and frames, including rail/glazing bar repairs, epoxy repairs and re-cording weighted windows. Participants will also learn how energy-efficiency features can be retrofitted to old windows.

Heritage Fabric Identification and Building Recording

This two-day course runs through the identification of buildings, building elements and other heritage items, including identification of framing, construction methods and joinery elements, timber species identification etc. The process of measured drawing and extant recording will be taught, in-line with heritage industry standards. Skills learned will be put into practice with the on-site recording of a heritage building.

An enjoyable one-day course which details the Articles of the ICOMOS Australia Burra Charter. The Burra Charter is the important philosophy that underpins all approaches to conservation in Australia. In this course, participants will discuss the Charters articles to understand why, using real life examples, decision making and working within a sound conservation philosophy is necessary. Through this participants will develop a greater awareness of the Burra Charter and be able to apply them in a range of planning and practical applications. Traditional Plaster Repair and Lime Render Finishes

This two-day course is led by Mark Woodley, a fourth-generation traditional plasterer with over 25 years’ experience in restoration work. This course will cover the theory behind traditional plastering, including materials selection, preparation and application methodology - with a focus on the use of traditional lime products. The course will detail diagnostic techniques to get to the cause of plaster failure and walk participants through the planning of restoration work (with a focus on the principles of the Burra Charter). A focus will also be on the stabilisation of near-failing plaster as a means of demonstrating that sometimes a minimal approach can lead to the best outcomes. The course will include a practical component at the historic Maher’s Point Cottage at Oatlands, where restoration work to a failed lathe-and-plaster ceiling will be undertaken.

Interior Finishes: How to identify, conserve and replicate historic surface finishes

This practical two day course shows participants how to research, identify and apply traditional interior finishes, whilst maintaining a balance between conservation and everyday use. Interior finishes include traditional paints (milk paint, limewash, distemper etc.), wallpaper and timber finishes (shellac, oil, waxes and so on). This course provides guidance on why a traditional finish is important to use, both for technical and aesthetic benefits and how to select the appropriate finish for your project.

Archaeological Reserach and Survey

This two-day course will run participants through the theory and practice of a basic survey of an archaeological site. Participants will be taken through the basics of archaeology from desktop research to locate a site, using of aerial imagery and historic maps/plans. This will lead to the assessment of archaeological potential and significance, through to the actual practical in-field survey and recording of sites. No prior experience is necessary, and no excavation will be undertaken in this course. Courses will include surveying a heritage site, and can be adapted to a specific group’s particular interest (if numbers are sufficient).

Focusing on easy ways to improve energy efficiency and comfort of heritage homes along with good long term investments to consider if doing renovations, this course offers practical cost effective solutions.
